Youth Roots in the City: Food, Land and Art for the Future

We are proud to participate with our project “Youth Roots in the City: Food, Land and Art for the Future” in the framework of the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) program of Bloomberg Philanthropies, of the Municipality of Athens, which aims to activate young people to address climate change. The project is a participatory youth intervention that unites peri-urban cultivation, experiential education and artistic expression.

It focuses on the concept of food as a cultural and environmental value and proposes the creation of a community vegetable garden and the organization of artistic actions on the occasion of cultivation.

A multifaceted action with a reference point of the creation of a vegetable garden, learning about the cultivation of food in the city and participation in the open spaces of the 9th Lyceum of Athens. The young people will meet young farmers from Aspropyrgos, will be introduced to the cultivation of vegetables creating art works.

The project responds to the disconnection of young people from

  1. the cycle of food production and consumption
  2. the lack of experiential environmental education
  3. the need to strengthen community cohesion
  4. art as a unifying link for actions for food and the environment

The intervention is crucial in an era of food and ecological uncertainty, and is part of the vision for sustainable, green and resilient cities.
